Excessive sun exposure is one of the primary causes of skin damage and aging. UV rays initiate inflammatory processes in the skin and the free radicals created by these rays can damage nearly all the structures of your skin. However, sunlight is 100% required in health and wellness, as the influence of UV is far more than skin deep.
The sun’s UV light penetrates your skin and triggers the release of vitamin D, which is necessary for serotonin production. (Seratonin is the brain hormone associated with mood elevation.) Having proper vitamin D and seratonin levels play an important role in DNA health, and low levels are linked to higher rates of disease and depression. Therefore reaping the benefits of the sun and spending time outdoors, using safe sun practices, are equally as important. Remember, balance is key.
